The MAN B&W L23/30H is a four-stroke, medium-speed engine with a 225 mm bore and 300 mm stroke. It is one of the most widely used generator engines at sea, built in five to eight cylinder versions and fitted on thousands of bulk carriers, tankers and container ships. Because so many are still running, a good supply of spares keeps these engines working long after the original maker parts become expensive.
The parts that wear first
- Fuel injection valves, nozzles and fuel pumps, which affect combustion, smoke and fuel consumption.
- Cylinder heads, inlet and exhaust valves, valve guides and seats, especially on engines running on heavy fuel oil.
- Pistons, piston rings and piston pins, replaced at major overhauls.
- Connecting rods, big end and main bearings, which need checking at every overhaul.
- Camshaft parts: cam guides, camshaft bearings, thrust washers and gear rims.
- Indicator valves, gaskets and O-rings, small items that are easy to forget.
What to keep on board
Class and the maker’s manual set the minimum spares. In practice, superintendents also keep a spare fuel injection valve or nozzles for each cylinder, at least one complete cylinder head, a set of valves, piston rings for one unit, a set of bearings, and a full gasket and O-ring kit for one cylinder overhaul. With three generators on board, one well-stocked set covers most breakdowns.
Used, reconditioned or new
Used original parts, such as cylinder heads, connecting rods and camshafts, are inspected and measured, and suit most overhauls at a much lower cost.
Reconditioned parts, such as cylinder heads with reground seats and new valves, or overhauled fuel pumps, are ready to fit.
New spares, OEM or quality equivalents, are the right choice for wear parts such as rings, nozzles, gaskets and bearings.
